We've got a pair of blends up for review, one blended malt and the other blended scotch from Little Brown Dog.
Little Brown Dog Campbeltown Mega Blend
Region: Campbeltown
ABV: 56.2%
Price: £59.00
Bottled on 12 June 2025, this blended malt brings together whiskies from all three active Campbeltown distilleries: 9 year old Glen Scotia, 12 and 16 year old Kilkerran, and 10 and 21 year old Springbank. Matured in a mix of first fill bourbon and refill sherry casks. Around 800 bottles were released.
Nose
The nose opens very citrus forward with lemon juice and orange Chewits. Behind that sits some tobacco, toffee, chocolate, strawberry ice cream, a touch of peanut, very light peat and some charred wood. The alcohol balance is good just showing as a slight prickly pepper spice. The Campbeltown funk shows briefly then fades as we sit with the glass.
Palate
The palate is very sweet with chocolate coins, orange Fruit Pastilles, fresh strawberries and simple syrup. Sea salt and icing sugar appear on the mid palate. That sweetness lingers with a little too much pepper spice on a medium finish. The Mouthfeel is good. The peat is more restrained on the palate than the nose.
Nose (with water)
The reduced nose brings out more Campbeltown funk, alongside cola cubes and Cadbury Fudge Fingers. The pre diluted notes are still present, but they’re now sharing the spotlight with the diluted notes.
Palate (with water)
A touch hotter without water. Still very citrus forward, think orange Fanta. There’s also a little dark chocolate that appears on the mid palate. Finish remains a medium length, but has gained a touch of orange peel bitterness. The pre dilution notes are still here, and the mouthfeel holds up well.
Conclusion
A dram that doesn’t need water, but holds up well to a few drops. Sweet and easy drinking we’d almost consider this a dessert dram. It’s maybe just missing a little complexity needed to take it to the next level.
Score: 7.5/10
Value
Considering its components, it’s hard to say anything other than that this is cracking value.
Little Brown Dog Wee Mongrel Batch 4
Region: Scotland
ABV: 56.2%
Price: £88.00
Aged a minimum of twenty two years and fully sherry cask matured in a refill Oloroso butt and first fill PX hogsheads, this Little Brown Dog blended release uses ex Edrington stock and includes a grain component. Bottled on 18 July 2025 at cask strength with an Outturn of 497 bottles.
Nose
The nose opens with upfront dunnage funk, fresh pine and brioche buns, then fresh cherries, prunes and blackcurrant cordial. The alcohol spice is minimal. With time we find cola cubes, cinnamon and a little Ribena. It’s pleasant to nose, but very much sherry led dram. Not that many will complain about that.
Palate
The palate has red cola, milk chocolate, prunes and reduced raisins, moving into Caramac and orange marmalade on the mid palate. Cinnamon and a touch of ginger appear on the medium length finish. Speaking of the finish there’s plenty of sweetness with that spice. The Mouthfeel is good. Much like the nose it’s just sherry.
Nose (with water)
The reduced nose is broadly similar, but it does gain treacle, a hint of ketchup and a little gingerbread. The Alcohol remains well balanced.
Palate (with water)
With water we’re getting a bit more fresh ginger spice now, but outwith that it’s pretty similar. Mouthfeel has held up well, and those pre dilution notes are all still present and accounted for. Finish remains a medium length just a touch more spicy.
Conclusion
A well executed sherry blend that delivers everything a Sherry bomb lover could ask for. It is not our favourite of the Wee Mongrel releases, and it is not the most complex either, but it is tasty and very drinkable neat or with a small splash.
