We're looking at a peated Bunnahabhain from Uncharted Whisky Co.

Uncharted Whisky Co. Whole Lotta Rosé 7 Year Old (Peated Bunnahabhain)

Region: Islay

ABV: 55.0%

Price: £65.00

Distilled at Bunnahabhain in 2019 and bottled in March 2026, this 7 year old peated Islay single malt was fully matured in first fill red wine barriques. Outturn of 644 bottles.

Nose
Unsurprisingly, the nose opens with red berries, strawberry jam, and raspberries. Behind that come dried earth, salted peanuts, icing sugar, salted caramel, and Bovril. The alcohol is well integrated. The downside is it feels a touch disjointed, less like the whisky was matured in a red wine cask and more like Staoisha has been mixed with rosé wine.

Palate

Similar to the nose, there is a big upfront hit of red fruit sweetness and icing sugar, followed by salty peat. The mid-palate brings dried earth, orange wine, and peanuts. A little much ginger spice joins the sweeter notes on the medium length finish. The mouthfeel is solid and, importantly, it does not become overly tannic like a lot of whisky in wine casks.

Nose (with water)

Water hasn’t made a great deal of difference to the nose. There are now some pencil shavings and gingerbread notes joining the slightly muted pre-dilution aromas. The alcohol spice remains in good balance, though on the bright side the dram does feel a little less disjointed now.

Palate (with water)

Water brings out honey, Cadbury Caramel, and red grapes alongside the pre-dilution notes. The mouthfeel has diminished slightly, as has the peat. The finish remains medium in length, with the spice still present but now in better balance, integrating nicely with the sweeter notes.

Conclusion

The nose definitely drags the score down for us on this one. Even putting that aside, the mix of flavours on the palate is not really in our wheelhouse. To be fair, we do find wine cask whiskies very hit and miss. We are sure some people will score this a touch higher, but for us it sits firmly in 6 territory.

Score: 6/10

Value

Peated cask strength Islay whisky for £65 is a pretty good deal, even if it is only 7 years old.
