We're looking at a single malt from Loch Lomond distillery, bottled by Tri Carragh.

Tri Carragh Inchmurrin 12yo 2014 Peated Red Wine Octave Finish

Region: Highlands

ABV: 59.9%

Price: £79.00

Distilled at Loch Lomond on the 6th January 2014 and bottled by Tri Carragh in 2026 after 12 years of maturation, this Inchmurrin single malt was finished for nine months in a second-fill red wine octave that had previously held peated whisky. Outturn of just 78 bottles.

Nose
The nose opens with sugar cubes, cheese and chive crisps, buttercream icing and a hit of pepper spice giving away the alcohol. With time and air we can also pick out notes of Coco Pops, a hint of gingerbread, light red fruits, Nesquik and some lemon juice. That peated octave hasn’t really added much in the way of smoke, but it’s an interesting enough nose.

Palate

The palate starts off nothing like the nose. It opens with pineapple, guava, passion fruit, white sugary sweetness and a touch of spice on the finish from ginger and pepper. Some red fruits start to appear on the mid palate as we revisit it. The mouthfeel is solid, and the finish is medium in length, with some roasted coffee now joining the spice and sweetness.

Nose (with water)

With water the dominant notes on the nose are now Terry’s Chocolate Orange, cheese, caramel and chives, must and dry wood. While not bad, it’s a now simpler than it was pre dilution.

Palate (with water)

There’s now a little bitterness on the palate from dark chocolate and a note that reminds us of a Walnut Whip, alongside tangerines and a more intense hit of roasted coffee. The spice has reduced slightly. The mouthfeel has held up well, and the finish remains medium in length.

Conclusion

There’s some interesting notes on both the nose and palate, but they’re not all to our tastes. Although we appreciate some may enjoy this more than we did. This is also our first Tri Carragh review, and while it’s not quite hit the spot for us there’s enough here to make us want to check out what else they’ve done.

Score: 6.5/10

Value

Not a bad price given the peated octave finish.
