Whisky: Ledaig 2007 Whisky sponge Edition #24
Region: Highland
ABV: 53%
Price: £97
Whisky sponge for those of you who are unaware is an independent bottler setup by Angus MacRaild who is known for blogging for Whiskyfun and Whiskysponge. You can purchase his bottles at Decadent Drinks.
Nose
Barbecued pork skewers with onions and peppers, rusted metal, strong earthy peat, ash, tar, red wine vinegar. You’d be forgiven in thinking it was Islay, its actually heavier than most islay whiskies.
Palate
Herbal notes on the forefront of the palate, followed by charred meat and ashy bark notes. Dirty earth and saline notes appear after. Dark fruits linger on the finish. Very well integrated with no flavours overpowering the others.
Nose and palate (with water)
Smoked bacon with honey, tomatoes on a charcoal grill, salted peanuts, Sichuan peppercorns. Quite a dirty dram in a good way. Finish is medium length.
Conclusion
A balance of smoke, sweetness, meatiness and salt coming together to create a great dram. Quintessential Ledaig with a dirty sherry influence. I’d take another bottle
Score: 8/10

- 6 - Passable. Would accept a dram, but wouldn’t seek it out.
- 5 - Poor. Would drink if it was the only option.
- 4 - Bad. Maybe it can be saved by ginger beer?
- 3 - Awful. It can't be saved by ginger beer.
- 2 - Pour it out
