Whisky: Glenfarclas 25 TWE London Edition
Region: Speyside
ABV: 50.5%
Price: £150
Matured in oloroso sherry casks, and bottled to celebrate The Whisky Exchange's 20th Anniversary. There is conflicting information on the number of bottles released but given this is still available to buy I assume that it is not a single cask and that it is an ongoing release1.
Nose
Dark chocolate cherries, slight sulphur, Christmas cake, brown sugar, sherry vinegar, slightly vegetal, and baked apples.
Palate
Very spicy on the initial palate, alcohol, sweetened black tea. Kinder bueno, dark chocolate bounty bar, candarel sweetener, a certain waxiness and woodiness. Finish is short and slightly watery.
Nose (with water)
A mustiness emerges on the nose along with honeysuckle.
Palate (with water)
Water adds some buttered brown bread, and lightly roasted coffee.
Conclusion
Quite disappointed in the use of coloured glass to obscure the colour of the whisky2 - definitely looks different on the website than it does in real life. Expected a heavier sherry influence but got a muted, tired cask feel. In general the whisky fell short of expectations.
1 The Whisky Exchange have confirmed that they have not released the number of bottles due to it being an ongoing release and they hope the number is many!
2 We'd like to clarify that the glass colour is typical of some Glenfarclas releases and not in any way to do with The Whisky Exchange.
Score: 6/10
- 10 - Perfection. A whisky that we’ll remember forever.
- 9 - Amazing. We’d pay through the nose for a bottle.
- 8 - Great. Pick this up at RRP.
- 7 - Good. Happy to have a dram or two but wouldn’t buy a bottle.
- 6 - Passable. Would accept a dram, but wouldn’t seek it out.
- 5 - Poor. Would drink if it was the only option.
- 4 - Bad. Maybe it can be saved by ginger beer?
- 3 - Awful. It can't be saved by ginger beer.
- 2 - Pour it out
- 1 - We’ve never tried a whisky rated this low and hopefully never will.
