Blue Spot 7yo Cask Strength

Whisky: Blue Spot 7yo Cask Strength

Region: Ireland

ABV: 58.7%

Price: £75

Blue Spot Irish whiskey was discontinued back in the 1960s, This relaunched Blue Spot is a triple distilled 7 year old single pot still Irish whiskey, drawn from a combination of bourbon, sherry, and Madeira casks aged between 7 and 20 years.

Nose

Candied fruits, jolly ranchers, starburst, strawberry bon bons, Little bit of grain alcohol on the nose, malty and vanilla essence.

Palate

Quite hot initially, explosion in a fruit shop, could be quite easily mistaken for a grain whisky, vanilla slice, some toasted oak flavour, The sherry influence is there, but not too much, almost overwhelmingly sweet.

Nose (with water)

The sweetness mellows and gives way to citrus fruits, almonds coated in milk chocolate.

Palate (with water)

Toffee apples, cinnamon, little pepperiness. Some light liquorice.

Conclusion

Initially it’s like being smacked in the face by a bag of candy, but over time and with water, it becomes a lovely balanced dram. Incredible for a 7 year old age statement whisk(e)y, but this is most likely because of some older casks used in the vatting.

Score: 8/10

  • 10 - Perfection. A whisky that we’ll remember forever.
  • 9 - Amazing. We’d pay through the nose for a bottle.
  • 8 - Great. Pick this up at RRP.
  • 7 - Good. Happy to have a dram or two but wouldn’t buy a bottle.
  • 6 - Passable. Would accept a dram, but wouldn’t seek it out.
  • 5 - Poor. Would drink if it was the only option.
  • 4 - Bad. Maybe it can be saved by ginger beer?
  • 3 - Awful. It can't be saved by ginger beer.
  • 2 - Pour it out
  • 1 - We’ve never tried a whisky rated this low and hopefully never will.
